Bloodbeast Conversion – ‘Deathtrap Dungeon’ Fighting Fantasy Monster

I’ve been running one of my players through Ian Livingstone’s infamous ‘Deathtrap Dungeon’, live converting it to AGE as we go. My player is level 11.

One of the standout creatures (for me) is the Bloodbeast. I wanted to tackle a conversion of that, as it is something that can be killed easily if you are careful enough, but is terribly dangerous if you get too close for too long. I saw this as an opportunity to create a monster with a difference – one that causes no direct damage at all! Its spines have a small chance of harming you if you miss an attack, and its tongue simply grips you and pulls you towards the acidic slime.

The "eyes" have it.

The “eyes” have it.

Warlock of Firetop Mountain – Fighting Fantasy For AGE

I have recently run ‘The Warlock of Firetop Mountain’ as an AGE conversion.

The key method of success in converting a solo choose your own adventure book into a group type RPG is twofold:
First, I was lucky enough to find a map containing the dungeon along with its page numbers in place. This meant that I could make the book more malleable than it would normally be, backtracking and such. I always know how to move the players on if it comes to it.
The next thing I needed to do was find a list online, where all the creature encounters of the mountain are revealed. I simply had to go through that list and make some quick notes on how I would convert them if they were to happen. Most were simple references to GM books and other AGE files, but a couple did need whole new stat sheets made up – namely the vampire and Zagor himself.

These are simply my notes for my use. You may not agree with some of my decisions on conversion type, and by all means you should change it where you see fit. I just like the idea of sharing in case it helps.

Here’s the links you should need.

Vampire Conversion To Age/Thedas

A Vampire in Dragon Age I hear you gasp? Well, why not? You are the GM, with the fiat God like powers to make things true. In this case, I will take you through my thought process:

Vampires drink blood. Hmmm blood…Blood mages! Blood magic…but not mages…hmmm, so, this is a person who gives himself to Blood Magic’s teachings without having any magic to back it up, you know, cutting self and drinking it. Kinda like Emo Hanger On’s, groupies to the actual blood mages…They can undertake a very deadly ceremony of blood drinking/spirit fusion with a powerful enough mage of their order (who is sacrificed in the process) to create a type of abomination. He must have his own wrists and leg arteries exposed by a runic silver blade, while ingesting all 8 pints of the blood mage.
If the cultist survives the ordeal (less would survive than do with a Grey Warden Joining!) then you have – essentially, a vampire. Their long life is then due to the trapped spirit of the blood mage inside them. I have called this a Blood Apostle Cardinal.
Because they are in touch with the other side of life, with a spirit inside them who feels the pull of the fade upon it at each and every moment, it has access to every focus, from the echoes of knowledge of life after death. This foe is very deadly, consider it only for high levels, or those who are overly foolish or brave.

You can choose to have armour on yours or not.

Because this is a live file, I always have the option of tweaking it from further playtesting, so before you print it for use, make sure you hold the current version!

Minotaur For Riddling Reaver AGE Conversion

Here is the minotaur that features in Riddling Reaver, converted into AGE to use with my group. I figured I would share and let you make suggestions/playtest. Note, this minotaur is of course my own creation and very different to the one you can find in Green Ronin’s bestiary PDFs. That said, there is room in this world for lots of variations of the “same” thing – after all, creatures vary throughout the species. This particular foe is very tough indeed, but is just that: A particular foe, specially for the Riddling Reaver encounter, where we find a Minotaur who can breathe poison gas and is emaciated now. I have taken it that he was once a great warrior champion of his kind, which only lets you imagine how he would be if not enslaved…
Consider this against tier 3 parties only.

Let me give you some more context from the book. The fight against the beast takes place as you need to claim the ring in his nose, as an adventure item. This means he probably must be slain, unless you concoct some clever ring tear mechanic into the fight for your players, or they request it.

You fight the minotaur in a ring, with a crowd watching and cheering. You are only supposed to last 7 rounds against it, which gives you your prize money.
If you hit 0 hp against this foe, it of course will end the fight, and allies should be able to come in and heal you, thus saving your life. Then, if you still need the ring, another of your party could step into the ring in an attempt to whittle it down further.

Let me know how you get on with it.

Monstrous Zombie Constrictor (Converted For AGE)

A 15 foot long monster, as seen in Madness In Freeport’s ‘Sunken Temple of Yig’, the Avatar of Yig.
This is the converted creation I made into the Age system to run it for a Dragon Age group of level 9’s.

Yes I know it’s a constrictor and I’ve added a spit type ability. But for goodness snake, it’s an Avatar of a God, so I thought, oh well why not then? After all, I’m sure there’s no handy omeprazole or peptac around in those days…

You can see Lory and I recount the battle between this monster and my party here

Without further ado (or a-don’t doing), here’s the link to the profile: https://docs.google.com/document/d/1G65XnL5esvH2_48vGb9Y6bktxJsVlzmnQPiVX-UG5Ac/edit?usp=sharing

Enjoy and modify as you see fit. It ran great with my group and was a delightfully dangerous encounter as written.

New Deadly Wolf Profile To Use

My group and I have been dissatisfied with the standard AGE system wolves. An encounter with them always comes across so pedestrian and bland; just another enemy to hit you until it dies from your hits…oh dear, exactly!

To be feared and respected

To be feared and respected

So I thought about what it might actually be like to fight wolves for real. Their attacks would be fiercely damaging, fast and tearing. Conversely, their health would be lower than that of a “human” foe because they aren’t actively parrying and such (in terms of the bubble of invulnerability shrinking – hit points, not health points!)

So, I’ve really upped the ante here. I would recommend that tier one characters minus 2D6 from the damage and tier 2 groups consider a minus of 1D6 from it instead. This is a battle that should be fast, furious and uncertain.

And of course, because it’s me, here’s an accompanying video.
